Wolves Slip Past Jackets, 83-79

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Despite a team-high 20 points from senior DeAndre Chambers, the Montana State Billings men's basketball team was unable to hold find a solution against a tough Western Oregon University team down the stretch, falling to the Wolves 83-79 Thursday evening.

 

“We were in the game the entire way tonight,” said head coach George Pfeifer. “We did a better job of taking care of the ball, but we still turned it over 12 times, which led to a handful of points for the other team. We have to continue to improve and get ourselves ready for Saint Martin's on Saturday night.”

 

Including Chambers, four players scored in double-figures for the Yellowjackets as Jaxon Myaer helped the effort with 15 points and three assists. Tyler Barnes dumped in 14 points with a team-high six rebounds, while Raason Young added 10 points.

 

The Yellowjackets dropped to 4-13 overall and 2-8 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference despite shooting 57.9 percent from the floor during the game and an above season average of 36.4 percent from behind the arc.

 

As in the first meeting between the two schools, MSUB dominated the first half, going on a 12-0 run during the middle of the half to build a 10 point lead. The Jackets saw their lead swell by as many as 17 points with just 4:44 to go in the first half.

 

The Wolves would go on a tear however, closing out the half on a 22-8 run to cut the MSUB lead down to three, 41-38, as the two teams went into the locker rooms.

 

The Yellowjackets maintained the lead throughout much of the second half, but at the 4:54 mark, Terrance Glynn drove in the lane and connected on a game-tying layup. On the Wolves' next trip down the floor, Blair Wheadon connected for a 3-pointer to give the Wolves the final lead of the game.

 

MSUB tried to cut back into the deficit, getting as close as 75-74, but WOU connected on their free throw opportunities in the closing moments to take the victory.

 

Wheadon led all scorers with 22 points and had six rebounds. Kyle Long collected 18 points and four assists, while Glynn had 17 points, going 7-of-9 from the line, and pulling down a game-high seven boards.

 

The Wolves shot 52.5 percent from the floor for the game and were 8-of-24 from beyond the arc, shooting 68.4 percent from the free throw line.

 

The Jackets out rebounded the Wolves 31-28 and held a 42-38 edge in the paint. Western Oregon dominated points off of turnovers, converting 12 turnovers into 20 points, while MSUB made only seven points off of nine turnovers. The teams were fairly even on second chance points (17-18) and bench points (18-18).

 

The Yellowjackets finish their road trip on Saturday night, taking on Saint Martin's University. The Jackets dropped their first meeting of the season at home to the Saint. The game can be seen on webcast.
