BILLINGS, Mont. – Visiting Central Washington University swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match with Montana State Billings Saturday evening at Alterowitz Gymnasium. With the loss, the Yellowjackets fell to 0-10 on the year and 0-2 in conference play. CWU improved to 3-5 on the year and 2-2 in conference play.
The Yellowjackets were led by seven kills from Jennifer Boe. Hannah Johnson had six kills as the Yellowjackets struggled offensively to a .084 percentage for the match. Adrienne Kelso led the way with 13 digs. Brooke Tolman added 20 assists.
As a team, the Jackets had 25 kills with 17 errors for a .084 average.
Conversely, the Wildcats hit .290 for the match as Kady Try led the team with 15 kills and Meg Ryan added 12. Ryan also had 12 digs, while Brandie Vea led the way with 15 digs. Carlee Marble led the way with 36 assists.
In the opening set, the Wildcats jumped out to a 5-2 lead as Vea had five consecutive serves helped out by three Yellowjacket miscues. CWU built the lead to 16-8 courtesy of a 9-3 run and held the Yellowjackets at bay the rest of the way for a 25-20 win.
The Jackets had 11 kills in the opening set with a game-high eight errors while CWU had 11 kills and three errors hitting .267.
The second set was the best performance by the Yellowjackets in the match. CWU again jumped out to an early lead, but this time MSUB rallied from a 19-13 deficit to close to 23-22 with a 9-4 run. Tolman had four consecutive serves during the run.
The Wildcats scored the next two points for the 25-22 win.
MSUB hit a team-high .138 in the second set with 11 kills and seven errors. CWU had 12 kills and six errors as they hit .207.
In the third set, the Wildcats continued the trend of jumping out early as they held an 11-5 lead with a kill from Ryan. From there, Meg Carini had 10 consecutive serves as the lead swelled to 20-6 and went on for a 25-9 win and the sweep.
The Yellowjackets will be back in action Sept. 23 at Saint Martin's and will return home Sept. 30 versus Alaska Fairbanks at 7 p.m. in Alterowitz Gymnasium.
