BILLINGS, Mont. – The 15th-ranked Western Washington Vikings downed Montana State Billings 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-12) Saturday evening in Alterowitz Gymnasium. With the loss, the Yellowjackets fell to 5-21 on the year and 5-12 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. WWU improved to 17-3 overall and 14-2 in conference play.
The Yellowjackets were led by nine kills and 11 digs from senior Jennifer Boe. Junior Melissa Porter had seven kills. Junior Brooke Tolman recorded 21 assists and freshman Taylor Adams had eight digs.
MSUB hit .042 with 24 kills and 23 assists. The Jackets committed 20 errors and had 38 digs.
The Vikings were led by 10 kills from Megan Amundson and Emily Jepsen chipped in nine kills. Kari Rice tallied 32 assists, while Allison Gotz and Jordyn Bailey each had double figure digs with 16 and 11, respectively.
WWU hit .316 for the match with 41 kills and 40 assists. The Vikings committed 11 errors and had 48 digs.
The Vikings went on an 11-0 run midway through the first set as Gotz had nine consecutive serves during the run. WWU was up 12-7 and settled for a 25-9 first set win as it closed with 15-3 run.
MSUB really struggled in the first set, hitting -.179 with just three kills and eight errors.
Both teams had their best performances in the second set as the Jackets tallied 13 kills and five errors as they hit .235. Western Washington tallied 16 kills and just two miscues for a .412 average as it won 25-19.
The Jackets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Vikings came back and took a 10-7 lead with a 10-4 run. WWU was up 20-14, but the Yellowjackets continued to fight and cut the deficit to 22-17, but dropped the set 25-19.
The Vikings used another big run in the third set for a 25-12 win and the sweep.
MSUB heads to cross-town rival Rocky Mountain College Monday at 7 p.m. at the Fortin Center, the will return home for the regular season finale a week from today versus Seattle Pacific at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.
