ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves downed visiting Montana State Billings 3-0 Thursday evening at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex with a 25-16, 25-22 and 25-14 victory. With the loss, the Yellowjackets fell to 4-19 overall and 4-10 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. UAA improved to 14-7 overall and 9-4 in conference play.
“At times it looked pretty good tonight, but again we had breakdowns as it was a bit of a step back for us,” MSUB head coach Steve Smith said. “In game three we started off well and then melted down and they ran away from us. As far as our overall defense, it is better. We are not quite there yet, but we are improving and continuing to work hard.”
The Yellowjackets were led by nine kills from senior Jennifer Boe. She hit a team-high .167 on the night and tallied a team-high 11 digs. Junior Melissa Porter was second on the team in kills with six. Junior Brooke Tolman led the way with 20 assists.
As a team, the Jackets hit .132 with 26 kills, 16 errors and 21 assists. They had five total blocks with 22 digs defensively.
UAA was led by 11 kills from Jackie Matthisen, while Robyn Burton, Cortney Lundberg and Marie Borowikow each tallied eight kills. Siobhan Johansen recorded 20 assists and Adriana Aukusitino chipped in 19.
The Seawovles hit .341 with 46 kills, 16 errors and 43 assists.
In the first set, UAA led 20-12 on back-to-back service aces by Matthisen and settled for a 25-16 win. MSUB hit .160 in the set with nine kills and five errors. UAA tallied 12 kills with just three errors for a .360 average.
The Jackets played the best statistically speaking in the second set as they hit .200 with nine kills and four errors. MSUB led in the early going 5-2, but an 11-3 run by the Seawolves forced the Jackets to call a timeout down 13-8.
MSUB cut it to 19-17 on a kill from sophomore Jody Lutz, but the Seawolves quickly swelled the lead to 24-19. That's when the Jackets fought off three set points courtesy of UAA miscues, but dropped the set 25-22.
Like the Yellowjackets hit their best in set two, the Seawolves returned the favor in set three as they recorded 17 kills with four errors for a match-high .481 average. MSUB hit a match-worst .038 on eight kills and seven errors in the set.
The Yellowjackets will be back in action Saturday as they battle Alaska Fairbanks at 3 p.m. Alaska time.
