Yellowjacket women’s soccer engages community at alum’s 4th-grade classroom

BILLINGS, Mont. – Visiting the classroom of a former player and Yellowjacket alumni on Friday, the Montana State University Billings women's soccer team went to Eagle Cliffs Elementary School to work with a class of fourth graders on a Thanksgiving project.

The Yellowjackets visited 2013 MSUB graduate Janae (Remsberg) Welch, who competed for the soccer team and completed her degree before becoming a teacher in Billings. "I'm super excited to have the MSUB women's soccer team come out into the community, especially to visit a former team member's classroom," Remsberg said. "I am grateful for their time and service, and my kids have been waiting for this since we put it together."

Players started off by introducing themselves to the classroom of fourth graders, describing their year in school and hometown to the children. The team then broke into small groups with the elementary students and

worked on completing Thanksgiving placemats in the spirit of the upcoming holiday.

"When I was a little girl, I loved when I got to meet people in college or even who played professionally," said sophomore forward Jordan Devoto. "It's always fun to give back and show these kids they can either be in our shoes one day or do whatever they want to do when they get older."

As part of the athletic department's community service initiative, Friday's classroom visit was one of several that Yellowjacket teams conduct on a regular basis. MSUB has its sights set on topping last year's mark of 1,400 community service and engagement hours, a collective effort from all athletic programs in the department.

"I talk about the team all the time and I have my plaque out here in the hallway," Remsberg said. "It's just great that they come out so our kids know that MSUB is for the kids, adults, and alumni as well. It was a great opportunity to have them here."
