Rovens' walk-off home run leads her to GNAC co-Player of the Week

PORTLAND, Ore. – MSUB softball's Bella Rovens was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference co-Player of the Week announced by the conference office Monday.

After the Montana State University Billings softball team was named the GNAC Team of the Week for its 3-1 series win over Central Washington, the Yellowjackets' Rovens earned her first career nod as a conference Player of the Week for her performance across the four-game series with the Wildcats.

Rovens, a 5'7" centerfielder from Sparks, Nev., helped led her team's offense as the Yellowjackets outscored Central Washington 42-36 in a four-game series at home.  Roven had eight hits in 17 at bats, including a game-winning home run in the eighth inning of a 12-10 victory Friday, as the Yellowjackets rallied from a 9-1 deficit in the fifth.  It was the first home run of the season for Rovens.

Rovens scored seven runs in the series against the Wildcats. She had five RBI's, a double and a home run. In centerfield, the sophomore made five catches for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in the series. She now has 38 putouts on the season for the Yellowjackets.

In Game 1 against the Wildcats, Rovens was 2-4 with a double, but it was Game 2 of the series where Rovens really came through for the team.

After being down 9-1, the Yellowjackets mounted a comeback that saw the team score eight runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to send the game to extra innings.

Central Washington hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to retake the lead by one. With one out and two on, Rovens launched her first home run of the year to right center field as MSUB overcame the eight-run deficit for the 12-10 extra-inning's win.

"Bella has been doing very well recently with her power slap and continued to do well this past weekend," MSUB head coach Lisa Allen said. "On her walk-off home run she kept her hands up well and made solid contact. She has really stepped up as our lead-off these past few weeks and we are proud of her for receiving the Player of the Week honor."

In the game, Rovens finished 3-4 with three runs, three RBI's and a stolen base. On Day 2, Rovens added another two hits, including a double, and two more stolen bases.

Rovens is batting .360 on the season which is third on the team and No. 17 in the GNAC. She is fourth in the conference in runs scored with 32.

Rovens is also second in stolen bases with 10 and second in walks with 20. Batting in the lead-off position this season for the Yellowjackets, Rovens' on base percentage is .470 – second in the GNAC and the only MSUB player in the top-10 in the conference.

The three stolen bases this weekend has Rovens at 10 on the season; tying her own record last season of 10th all-time in a single season at MSUB. With 20 career stolen bases, Rovens is now tied with Whitney Whittemore (2009-10) for seventh career all-time at MSUB.

Rovens shares the honor this week with Kailyn Campbell of Central Washington University.

The Yellowjackets will go on their last road-trip of the year facing Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho Friday and Saturday while returning home a series against the University of Great Falls Apr. 18-19, and Western Oregon on Apr. 24-25.
