LACEY, Wash. –
Kari Kastelic scored for the first time as a Yellowjacket, providing the only goal for Montana State University Billings in a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Saint Martin's Saturday afternoon at the SMU Soccer Field.
"The defense was very solid today," said head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak. "Krystal (Daniels) made some outstanding saves in goal for us."
Kastelic's goal came off of a set piece in the first half, as
Elizabeth Howard was credited with the assist on the play. Abby McFaul found the equalizer for SMU, scoring her first goal of the season in the 62nd minute on a header into the back of the net.
Overall on the game, MSUB (2-1-1, 0-1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) outshot the Saints 15-8 and placed nine shots on frame compared with SMU's four. The 'Jackets won six corner kicks with the Saints taking four.
MSUB goalkeeper
Krystal Daniels came up with three saves on the game, while the Saints' Sunny De Boer kept her team alive with eight. SMU moved to 0-4-2 on the season and picked up its first GNAC points with its conference record now sitting at 0-1-1.
Chelsea Shuman opened up the action less than a minute into the game, placing a shot on target that was saved by De Boer.
McFaul had the first shot of the day for SMU, testing Daniels in the eighth minute.
Amanda Perri managed a pair of shots for the Yellowjackets that came less than a minute apart. She forced De Boer to make another save with a strike on frame in the 10th minute, and missed wide left of the goal in the 11th.
Alisa Sagdahl uncorked her first shot of the day in the 16th minute, but De Boer made another save to prevent the first goal of the match.
The 'Jackets broke through midway through the first half, as Kastelic found the net in the 25th minute off of a free kick by Howard.
Brittney Greenback managed a shot off of a corner kick by
Madison Barber in the 42nd minute, but De Boer made a save to keep MSUB's lead at 1-0.
Entering the second half down by a goal, SMU had the first big chance of the period on a shot by Nikki Roberts in the 53rd minute. McFaul re-entered the game on a substitution four minutes later, before tying the score in the 62nd minute with a header goal on an assist by Randi Mielke.
Daniels made a big save for MSUB in the 74th minute, preventing a shot by Sasha Dini from giving the Saints a late lead.
Ashely Marra placed a late shot on target, but De Boer made another save in the 81st minute to keep the score at 1-1.
Reigning GNAC Freshman of the Year Kelli Bannerman took one final shot for the Saints in the 89th minute, but missed wide right and the game went into overtime.
MSUB came out of the break strong, as Howard and Perri each fired a shot within the first three minutes of the extra period.
Sagdahl created a chance for the 'Jackets, as her shot on frame was deflected out by De Boer to give MSUB a corner kick.
Haley McFarlane directed a cross towards goal, but the Saints' keeper again saved the day to keep the game going.
In the second overtime period, Shuman launched a shot 33 seconds in but missed high. Neither team had a dangerous opportunity as time wound down, and both settled for their first conference points of the season with the draw.
"We are looking forward to our GNAC home opener next weekend," Krakowiak said.
NEXT WEEK: GNAC play continues for the Yellowjackets next week, as MSUB begins a four-game homestand. The 'Jackets welcome Central Washington on Sept. 25 at 3 p.m., and will host the Falcons of Seattle Pacific two days later with a noon start time. Both games will be played at Yellowjacket Field, and will feature live video and statistics.
